What are Chelsea boots? History, Types, Style and Buyers Guide

 What are Chelsea boots?

Chelsea boots, also known as ‘paddock boots’ are an iconic wardrobe fashion that was designed in the Victorian age. The boots are usually worn close-fitted, both by men and women. They are usually ankle length and have elasticized sides which comes in handy while putting them on and off. The elastic is made of vulcanized rubber, which in simple terms is added sulfur to rubber. As a result, the rubber becomes more elasticized facilitating ease of movement in them. Vulcanized rubber is one of the most important items used in making Chelsea Boots, without which, the particular boot making would lose its essence.

Chelsea boots have undergone various changes and the one we see today can be said to be a mutated version. The traditional snug-fit Chelsea boots wear up to the ankle and have low heels. They have elasticized sides and rounded plain toes and come with pull tags that make it easier to take them out or wear them. The design was made in such a way as to cater to Queen Victoria’s comfort needs.

History of Chelsea Boots

Dating back to the Victorian age, the boots derived their name from the place of origination, Chelsea. Originally the boots were designed by J.Sparkes-Hall, who happens to be the personal cobbler of Queen Victoria but it went under various design schemes later by other cobblers.

The boots back then, became a fashion icon and people started wearing them for regular use such as walking and riding. The boots eventually gained popularity as country fashion in Chelsea and later became a prominent scene in London too. The world-famous music band, The Beatles, gave Chelsea Boots an important aspect of their style. It is said that their outfit style was a huge inspiration to bands like The Who, The Rolling Stones, and The SmallFaces.

Men's Chelsea boots types

Chelsea boots have changed since their invention in 1837 which has led to the birth of various styles.

Leather Chelsea boots:

Leather goes perfectly with formal attires. These leather boots give a sleek, simple, yet formal look. Brown leather boots can work well in case of semi-formal events or business matters. The quality of the leather must be chosen very carefully keeping in mind the care and maintenance of leather. In the case of regular use, premium quality leather must be chosen.

Brogue Chelsea boots:

Brogue boots are the ones that have perforated patterns on the toe side. They go nicely with semi-formals and casuals. In one word, it can be defined as ‘all rounder’. Mostly made up of leather, they give a smart yet much of a rugged look.

Suede Chelsea Boots:

This can be defined as the perfect pair of shoes to go with informal dress codes. They give an effortless casual look. It almost goes with anything causal in general. When in doubt, wear a pair of black suede Chelsea boots with your outfit. The suede material is luxurious and requires maintenance and care, much more than catering needs of leather. They can get easily stained and is a big no in case of bad weather days or roads with irregular textures.

Other than these prominent types, the boots can have leather or rubber soles. Some might have tapered toes that give a sharp, formal, and smart look, or might have rounded toes to give a casual look.
